Carstensz Pyramid, standing at an impressive 4,884 meters, is the highest peak in Indonesia and the tallest island peak in the world. Located in the remote western part of New Guinea, the mountain offers a unique climbing experience marked by its challenging conditions. The difficulty level of the ascent is often underestimated, as its remote location and unpredictable weather patterns can test even the most seasoned mountaineers. The climb itself is known for its complex rock faces and sharp ridges, demanding technical rock climbing skills and a high level of endurance.

The route to the summit is predominantly a rock climb, involving grades up to 5.8, with a significant portion of the climb along exposed ridges and steep faces. The limestone rock can be slippery when wet, which is a frequent occurrence given the mountain's tropical location. Climbers need to be prepared for sudden weather changes, as rain and swirling mists can envelop the peak without warning. Despite these challenges, reaching the summit of Carstensz Pyramid rewards climbers with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the vast expanse of the Papuan rainforest below.

Access to Carstensz Pyramid can be logistically challenging due to its remote location. Most expeditions require a helicopter flight to the base camp, bypassing the dense jungle that surrounds the area. The mountain's isolation adds to the allure, offering a sense of adventure that is becoming rare in today's well-trodden climbing destinations. While the logistics and climbing conditions can be demanding, those who successfully reach the summit find it a deeply rewarding experience. Currently, there are 17 guides offering expeditions to this remarkable peak, providing various levels of support to climbers aiming to conquer Indonesia's highest mountain.

Suite à 2 voyages organisés par Azimuth travel en Septembre 2024 et n’ayant jamais reçu de demande pour connaître notre avis, je voudrais apporter mon ressenti.
Voyage 1: Est Java 5 jours.
Nous avons été contraint de payer 190€ supplémentaires par personne car nous étions que 2 personnes bien que nous avions réservé plusieurs mois à l’avance. (nous avions la possibilité d’annuler)
Pas de communication informative avec Dominique, c’est toujours moi qui pose les questions et il répond (relativement rapidement)
Le guide était sympathique mais un peu trop nonchalant à notre goût.
Tellement cool qu’il ne s’est pas levé pour monter au point de vue du Bromo le matin. Rdv à 3h du matin (c’est vrai que c’est tôt, mais fixé par lui!) il m’a contacté à 5h50 en me disant qu’il serait en retard. Du coup nous y sommes allés seuls!
La voiture fournie était grande et confortable. Les hôtels réservés étaient aussi très bien.
Voyage 2: Sulawesi et trek en pays Toraja 11 jours au total.
Idem pas de communication proactive avec Dominique, c’est toujours moi qui pose les questions. Après avoir obtenu les coordonnées du guide, je l’appelle pour fixer le point de rdv et là, surprise: <<je ne suis pas courant>>! Grosse confusion et peur de m’être fait avoir. Finalement après quelques palabres, j’apprends que notre voyage est sous-traité à un prestataire de Makassar, qui lui aussi sous-traite aussi à un guide free lance!
Finalement c’est le patron du prestataire qui se coltine notre accueil, le temps au guide d’arriver. Bref pas très sérieux tout ça. C’est dommage car le guide était très bien et une fois dans ses mains, tout s’est très bien passé. Mais la communication se faisant en anglais et non pas en français comme décrit par Azimuth et il n’avait pas fait le trek depuis 2004!
La voiture fournie était grande et confortable. Les hôtels réservés étaient aussi très bien.
En conclusion nous avons aimé notre voyage et particulièrement le pays Toraja, mais je ne conseillerai pas l’utilisation de cette agence qui nous a procuré plus de désagréments que de confort. C’est finalement plus cool de tout organiser tout seul…. Dommage!

Following 2 trips organized by Azimuth travel in September 2024 and having never received a request for our opinion, I would like to share my feelings.
Trip 1: East Java 5 days.
We were forced to pay an additional €190 per person because we were only 2 people even though we had booked several months in advance. (we had the option to cancel)
No informative communication with Dominique, it's always me who asks the questions and he answers (relatively quickly)
The guide was friendly but a little too nonchalant for our taste.
So cool that he didn’t get up to go up to the Bromo viewpoint in the morning. Appointment at 3 a.m. (it’s true that it’s early, but set by him!) he contacted me at 5:50 a.m. telling me he would be late. So we went there alone!
The car provided was large and comfortable. The hotels booked were also very good.
Trip 2: Sulawesi and trek in Toraja country 11 days in total.
Same, no proactive communication with Dominique, it’s always me who asks the questions. After obtaining the guide's contact details, I call him to set up the meeting point and then, surprise: <<I'm not familiar>>! Huge confusion and fear of being fooled. Finally after a few discussions, I learned that our trip was subcontracted to a service provider from Makassar, who also subcontracted to a freelance guide!
Finally it is the boss of the service provider who struggles with our welcome, while the guide arrives. In short, it's not all that serious. It's a shame because the guide was very good and once in his hands, everything went very well. But the communication was in English and not in French as described by Azimuth and he had not done the trek since 2004!
The car provided was large and comfortable. The hotels booked were also very good.
In conclusion, we loved our trip and particularly the Toraja country, but I would not recommend using this agency which gave us more inconvenience than comfort. It’s ultimately cooler to organize everything on your own…. Damage!

Je tiens à remercier Azimuth adventure travel pour l’organisation de notre séjour de trek. Nous avons passé 12 jours formidables avec Dwi. C’est un guide très intéressant et à l’écoute. Il a su parfaitement bien adapté les randonnées à nos rythmes et nos demandes. Nous avons largement apprécié sa connaissance du pays et sa grande érudition.  Ma fille a été très heureuse d’échanger avec lui afin d’apprendre les rudiments du Bahasa Indonesia.
D’une façon plus générale, l’ensemble des intervenants (porteurs, cuisto, chauffeur) ont très bien rempli leur mission. Nous avons surpris par la tres bonne qualité des repas à 3000m d’altitude…

I would like to thank Azimuth adventure travel for organizing our trekking trip. We had a wonderful 12 days with Dwi. He is a very interesting and attentive guide. He was able to adapt the hikes perfectly to our rhythms and our requests. We greatly appreciated his knowledge of the country and his great erudition.  My daughter was very happy to talk with him to learn the basics of Bahasa Indonesia.
More generally, all those involved (porters, cook, driver) fulfilled their mission very well. We were surprised by the very good quality of the meals at 3000m altitude…

Un grand Merci tout d abord à Dominique qui a créé Azimuth pour la qualité des circuits proposés.  Nous sommes passé par lui pour notre croisière sur Komodo flores et nous avons été plus que conquis pour ce formidable programme ( dédicace à Salès notre guide ) pour ses explications sur son pays et son incroyable joie de vivre et gentillesse. Nous avons enchaîné  ensuite un second circuit toujours avec azimtuth pour Bali et sa région pendant une douzaine de jours.  De magnifique paysages , une organisation parfaite en compagnie de Rémi et Zein avec qui tous les jours l ambiance était parfaite ,pleines de discussions et rigolades...de formidables personnes . C'est les yeux fermés que nous reprendrons azimuth à l avenir . Merci beaucoup

A big thank you first of all to Dominique who created Azimuth for the quality of the circuits offered.  We went through him for our cruise on Komodo Flores and we were more than won over by this wonderful program (dedication to Salès our guide) for his explanations about his country and his incredible joie de vivre and kindness. We then followed a second circuit still with azimtuth for Bali and its region for a dozen days.  Magnificent landscapes, perfect organization in the company of Rémi and Zein with whom every day the atmosphere was perfect, full of discussions and laughs... great people. Nous avons eu la chance de découvrir Java Est avec Azimuth en compagnie de Reni (guide francophone) et Zein (chauffeur) pendant 4 jours, passés entre Yogyakarta et la pointe orientale de Java. Nous nous sommes régalés tant Reni et Zein étaient tous deux tout à la fois sympathiques, très professionnels,  prévenants, dotés d'humour,... bref un vrai plaisir d'être en leur compagnie.  Outre la beauté des paysages traversés, c'est aussi la qualité de l'organisation et la richesse des échanges qui ont fait de cette 1ère séquence avec Azimuth un magnifique séjour. Après un break sur Bali, nous repartirons toujours avec Azimuth sur Kalimantan avec envie et gourmandise. We had the chance to discover East Java with Azimuth in the company of Reni (French-speaking guide) and Zein (driver) for 4 days, spent between Yogyakarta and the eastern tip of Java. We enjoyed ourselves as Reni and Zein were both friendly, very professional, considerate, blessed with humor,... in short, a real pleasure to be in their company.  In addition to the beauty of the landscapes crossed, it is also the quality of the organization and the richness of the exchanges which made this first sequence with Azimuth a magnificent stay. After a break in Bali, we will always return with Azimuth to Kalimantan with desire and greed. Nous avons effectué le circuit rites funéraires Toraja et majestueux  volcans de Java.
Nous avons eu la chance d'avoir Oda comme guide sur Java. Sa gentillesse et son professionnalisme ont contribué au bon déroulement de notre séjour. Oda parle très bien le français et mettait un point d honneur à répondre à toutes nos questions. Elle est bienveillante et pleine de bonnes attentions ( veiller à ce que les plats ne soient pas trop pimentés pour nos petites papilles françaises !, respecter notre rythme etc....) Nous la recommandons ++++++
Mamath, un chauffeur exceptionnel tant par sa conduite que par sa gentillesse. Véhicule toujours nickel et il parle aussi  le français.

We completed the Toraja funeral rites and majestic volcanoes of Java circuit.
We were lucky to have Oda as our guide on Java. His kindness and professionalism contributed to the smooth running of our stay. Oda speaks French very well and made a point of answering all our questions. She is caring and full of good attention (making sure that the dishes are not too spicy for our little French taste buds!, respecting our pace etc....) We recommend her ++++++
Mamath, an exceptional driver both in terms of his driving and his kindness. Vehicle always perfect and he also speaks French.
